Surgeon Questions in Lebanon Surgery FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Surgery

Patients considering surgery often have questions about their diagnosis, whether surgery is necessary, available techniques, recovery, and potential risks.

In this surgery FAQ, Dr. Joseph Gharios answers common surgeon questions in Lebanon related to endocrine, digestive, hernia, bariatric, robotic, minimally invasive, and proctologic surgery.

01

Endocrine & Thyroid Surgery

5 questions
When does a thyroid nodule require surgery?

Not every thyroid nodule requires surgery. The decision depends on factors such as ultrasound findings, biopsy results, nodule size, symptoms, growth, and the patient's individual risk profile. Selected benign thyroid nodules may also be candidates for radiofrequency ablation (RFA).

Can thyroid surgery affect my voice?

The recurrent laryngeal nerves, which control vocal cord movement, are located close to the thyroid gland. Careful nerve identification and preservation are essential during thyroid surgery, and intraoperative nerve monitoring may provide an additional safety tool.

Will I need thyroid medication after surgery?

This depends on how much of the thyroid is removed and how the remaining thyroid functions. Patients undergoing total thyroidectomy generally require lifelong thyroid hormone replacement.

What is radiofrequency ablation for thyroid nodules?

Radiofrequency ablation, or RFA, is a minimally invasive treatment that uses thermal energy to reduce the size of selected benign thyroid nodules while preserving thyroid tissue.

When is parathyroid surgery needed?

Parathyroid surgery may be recommended for patients with primary hyperparathyroidism when clinical findings meet surgical criteria. Evaluation typically considers calcium and PTH levels, symptoms, bone and kidney health, and imaging findings.

02

Digestive & Gallbladder Surgery

3 questions
Do gallstones always require surgery?

No. Gallstones that do not cause symptoms may not require surgery. Laparoscopic gallbladder removal may be recommended when gallstones cause recurrent pain, inflammation, or other complications.

What is laparoscopic cholecystectomy?

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove the gallbladder through small incisions. It is commonly performed for symptomatic gallstones and gallbladder inflammation.

When does a hiatal hernia require surgery?

Surgery may be considered for selected patients with significant symptoms, persistent reflux despite appropriate treatment, large paraesophageal hernias, or related complications. The decision is made after individual evaluation.

03

Hernia Surgery

3 questions
Does every hernia need surgery?

Not every hernia requires immediate surgery. The decision depends on its type, size, symptoms, progression, and risk of complications.

What are the symptoms of an inguinal hernia?

An inguinal hernia may cause a groin bulge, pain, heaviness, or discomfort that becomes more noticeable with physical effort, coughing, or straining.

Can a hernia be repaired laparoscopically?

Yes. Many hernias can be treated using laparoscopic techniques. Open or robotic repair may also be appropriate depending on the hernia and individual patient factors.

04

Bariatric Surgery

4 questions
Who may be considered for bariatric surgery?

Eligibility is determined through an individualized assessment that considers BMI, obesity-related conditions, previous weight-management efforts, medical history, and other clinical factors.

What is the difference between sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass?

Sleeve gastrectomy reduces the size of the stomach, while gastric bypass creates a smaller stomach pouch and changes part of the digestive pathway. The appropriate procedure depends on factors including reflux, metabolic disease, BMI, previous surgery, and individual health considerations.

What types of gastric bypass are available?

Procedures include Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB/Omega Loop). Procedure selection requires a comprehensive medical and surgical evaluation.

Can bariatric surgery be redone or revised?

Revision bariatric surgery may be considered after a previous procedure in cases such as significant weight regain, persistent reflux, anatomical complications, or an inadequate metabolic response.

05

Robotic & Minimally Invasive Surgery

3 questions
What is minimally invasive surgery?

Minimally invasive surgery uses specialized instruments and smaller incisions to perform procedures that may otherwise require a larger open incision.

What is the difference between robotic and laparoscopic surgery?

Both are minimally invasive approaches. In laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon directly controls the instruments. In robotic-assisted surgery, the surgeon controls instruments through a robotic surgical platform that can provide enhanced visualization and range of movement.

Is robotic surgery appropriate for every patient?

No. Robotic surgery is selected when it is appropriate for the patient's condition and offers a meaningful surgical or technical advantage.

06

Proctology

3 questions
Does rectal bleeding always mean hemorrhoids?

No. Hemorrhoids are one possible cause of rectal bleeding, but other conditions can cause similar symptoms. Persistent or unexplained bleeding should be medically evaluated.

Can an anal fissure heal without surgery?

Many acute anal fissures can improve with conservative treatment. Chronic fissures that do not respond adequately may require additional medical or surgical treatment.

Can pilonidal cysts be treated with laser surgery?

Minimally invasive laser techniques may be considered for selected cases of pilonidal disease. The appropriate treatment depends on the extent of the disease, previous infections, and recurrence.
